Mexico Vacations and Resorts

A must on your Mexico Vacation is a visit to a tianguis. It is an open air market or bazaar that is traditionally held on certain market days in a town or city neighborhood.  If you’ve never experienced a Mexican tianguis you are in for a colorful cultural treat!

Our Mexican market features everything from ladies bras and lacy underwear, to a pipe wrenches, pirated DVD’s, any type of plastic ware needed for the house, clothing, in short for the Mexicans everything they need for their daily life. During the tourist season you’ll also find pottery and weavings, of the various indigenous groups, primarily Nahuatl from Oaxaca, for me this is the most interesting and colorful part of the tianguis.

For us locals…. The person I probably visit the most is the repair GUY, always has parts for our blenders, coffemakers, and any other small appliances, so don’t throw it away, save it for my MAN to repair.

You’ll find a wonderful selection of traditional local food and drinks such as shredded carrots, cucumbers and beets mixed together and then bathed in lime juice. Or Aguas frescas, fresh fruit drinks that are very popular all over Mexico. These refreshing beverages are typically served from large barrel-shaped glass containers.  Some of the more traditional varieties of our area are jamaica (hibiscus floor), tamarindo and horchata (rice milk).

The tianguis usually start setting up at 7am and go until they run out of customers, 3-4 in the afternoon.

The market is in Villa Obregon (Melaque) on Wednesday, and in Barra de Navidad on Thursday. And if you are thinking of going to Cihuatlan, the Tianguis is there on Tuesday. A regular touring market, shop til you drop for Mexican treasures!!
