The Mexico Report names Dr. Rosa Vivas Alcaraz one of the 'Real Heroes of Mexico'

Real Heroes of Mexico

The MEXICO Report announced its ‘2012 Real Heroes of Mexico’ showcasing profiles of Mexicans, Americans and Canadians who were nominated by the general public along with nine ambassadors. The purpose of the ‘Real Heroes of Mexico’ project is to recognize the goodwill efforts and positive, inspirational stories taking place in Mexico today. From those battling press, delivering babies or rescuing animals, this one-of-a-kind effort showcases their acts of kindness, their achievements and dedication and takes it to a new level.

Each winter season indigenous Mixteco families travel to Cihuatlán looking for work on  the surrounding ranches.  Living conditions are very basic, the families have no access to medical care, the children work in the fields and do not attend school.  “Asistencia a la familia de Cihuatlan” lead by Dr. Rosa Vivas Alcaraz and her group of volunteers, is making a positive change in the lives of these families. In just three short years the group was able to raise funds to build housing for 18 families, school rooms, and a medical clinic.  The children after a day of work in the fields return to receive their only hot meal of the day. They then attend school with teachers and materials  provided by “Asistencia a la familia de Cihuatlan”.  There is a small medical clinic onsite and due to Dr. Rosa Vivas Alcaraz dedication and passion, the clinic is able to provide free medical care.  She regularly convinces medical representatives and fellow Doctors to leave extra samples, petitions the Mexican government for funds, and through her husband’s hotel, El Palmar Beach & Tennis Resort, she solicits supplies and funds from international guests to support the mission of improving the lives of the indigenous workers though education and access to medical care.   However, much of the funding and the volunteer work come directly from Dr. Alcaraz.  It’s her tireless passion and commitment that have sustained Modelo de Atention al Indigena Jornalero through the years and that’s why she was named one of the 'Real Heroes of Mexico.'
